Sometimes we don’t understand what idols are, or what they look like. But if we really analyze it, like we will be doing so today, we can see its deeper than we have been thinking it is. If we look at the definition of what an idol is, the internet tells us “Idols are objects or people that are not God but are worshiped as if they were”. It is so important to understand this because one of Gods commandments is,

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before Me Exodus‬ ‭20‬:‭2‬-‭3‬ ‭NASB2020”.‬‬
We need to be careful of not falling into this. A lot of times God blesses us with things and sometimes we aren’t careful, we make them idols. What I find crazy is that some people know what they are doing and others do it unconsciously. Things that God gives us should only be an addition, not a completion. We are complete once we have God in our lives. No one can fill what God can only fill. That is why I believe that God takes us into processes or seasons where we truly comprehend that. He never wants you to think that a human being or thing is your god. Another thing I find crazy is that we will never verbally say that something other than God, is our god. But unconsciously we think and make it our god, by how we treat it/let it govern our lives. We let people take the place that only God can take. We hold people on pedestals, that is why we are torn when people fail us. We hold them to a high standard that only God can truly meet, but we don’t understand that. We let fleeting things govern our hearts and lives, not understanding where our treasure is, our hearts are as well. We truly will know people by their fruits. You will know whether their hearts are on man or on God. I love verse 2 because we tend to forget it. For so many reasons he is worthy of being our only true God. But one of them is because he saved us, he took us out of slavery. Like he did with the Israelites, he saved them from being a slave to the Egyptians. He did the same thing to us with sin, when we didn’t even deserve it like the Israelites. Let’s not forget Gods deity, even if the world doesn’t recognize it. We have tasted and seen of his goodness, he is worthy of it all. If we are being honest we couldn’t do it without him, so why do we think that sometimes we can do it without him. Let’s not be adulterers like the word of God says. Yeah…. God doesn’t only see people who are married and cheat on their partners as adulterers. The Bible says,

“You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God James‬ ‭4‬:‭4‬ ‭NASB2020‬‬”.
The Bible is clear to state that we are his bride. God compares us to a woman who commits adultery, when we make friendship with the world. Meaning we sometimes tend to be like the world and flirt with it. When we make friendship with someone we let them into our hearts and have influence in our lives. We tend to be like the world and idolize what’s in it. Everyone does it differently, maybe they idolize money, their partners, their kids, their houses, cars, jobs, ministry, etc. We need to be careful with our hearts and that we don’t put anything else before our God. It’s God first and everything else goes after… In a world that loves to worship idols, we need to be careful who we worship/let reign our hearts. If you aren’t careful you can idolize the wrong thing. When you worship something you understand it holds first place in your heart, you obey, respect, trust and honor it above all. Only God should be holding that place in your heart. He is truly sovereign and none can compare to him!
